in may, had several events in denmark: an artist talk at nikolaj kunsthal in copenhagen, 10-projector installation moiréize with sune petersen at click festival in elsinore, and a live generative visual instruments with 3d animation workshop, also with sune, at videomappinglab at platform4 in aalborg. in april, max was on the jury at anifest in teplice, czech republic, where he also presented a screening of his films. he lectured at london college of communication and presented a screening of his work at frenz at strongroom in london. in march, amnesty international -commissioned stop the show came out (read more in stash + awn ). max did a short artist residency at artoll kunstlabor in bedburg-hau, germany; performed live with mikhail karikis at electrovision in london (read more in art wednesday ); presented at 6 million ways of getting into the arts: animation at university of salford, mediacityuk ; and gave a lecture + vj and projection workshop at plymouth college of art . in february, max lectured at university for the creative arts, farnham , spoke at plymouth university and gave a workshop for m.a. students at the royal college of art in london. in january, two new works came out: unclear proof (see features on computer arts and rooms magazine ) and a very large increase in the size, amount, or importance of something over a very short period of time (see the creators project ). nidden partikel was featured in nida art colony log issue 3, and russian cinemire blog published an extensive video interview with max. |

in december, max completed his 2nd experimental animation class for ba students at chelsea college of art & design - here is the winning film as selected by animator and cartoonist matt abbiss . also, logan & sons started representing max is the usa. in november, max attended l'alternativa in barcelona. unclear proof had a preview screening at perlage in italy. and hattler vs. hattler - max and hellmut hattler's first-ever audiovisual duo concert - premiered at sonic visions at franz.k in reutlingen, germany. max had a solo exhibition at playgrounds digital arts festival at gust van dijk project room in tilburg, holland. he gave a workshop at freie kunstakademie baden-württemberg in fellbach, germany, and a workshop at head: geneva university of art and design in geneva, switzerland. he lectured about his work at pro arte foundation and petersburg computer animation studio in st. petersburg, russia, as part of multivision festival , where he also gave a workshop and exhibited at erarta museum . max was also on the jury at tenderflix experimental film and video festival in london. in october, shift won the premio simona gesmundo in cetraro, italy and the award for best experimental film at tofuzi in batumi, georgia. shift also started screening on canal plus in spain. max played live with mikhail karikis at a/vant-garde at kings place in london (curated by out hear + d-fuse ). max did a skype q&a for visual music students at the university of southern california . in september, max's water screen installation x premiered at kxfs in london to critical acclaim. it was featured in computer arts , the creators project and huffington post uk , among many others. nidden partikel premiered at brick wall, waterfall at hackney downs studios in london. the work was created during max's artist residency at nida art colony , and commissioned by curating contemporary art at the royal college of art. your highness was voted top 10 of the festival at facade video festival in plovdiv, bulgaria. in august, max played live at abandon normal devices festival in manchester, uk. he was pixel palace artist in residence at tyneside cinema in newcastle, uk (july + august; see metro + the journal ), engaging in several events: retrospective screening max hattler presents... (including the premieres of model starship and catch); presentations at datarama 19 and the pixel palace breakfast; meet the artists sessions; a lecture at the factory . in july, max joined newly-formed, tokyo-based audio+visual artist collective jkd for representation in asia. max spoke about his new youtube channel at bafta / rushes soho shorts filmmakers' market in london. he attended lago film fest in revine lago, italy, where he was on the jury and presented a retrospective of his work (see: vive tv interview , il titolo interview ). 1925 aka hell won best experimental film at animation block party in brooklyn, ny. re:ax won best original score: animated (3rd prize) at socan foundation awards for young audio-visual composers in canada, and an honourary mention at marin county festival of short film + video . max was also featured in turbulences video (france, issue 76, p 44-47) and uce magazine (chroma issue). in june, max played live and presented a retrospective at international short film festival detmold in germany. he held a short workshop for visual communication m.a. students and gave 'industry feedback' to graduating m.a. animation students at the royal college of art in london. max also held a masterclass at golden kuker animation festival in sofia, bulgaria (see feature on inews.bg ). kaleidobooth was featured on blend magazine and mentioned in the guardian . max created a limited edition print to support the animate projects collection (see a-n article ). max was also interviewed in londawn zine (japan). in may, max's work featured in stash (issue 93), måg (issue 8, p 62-74) and art monthly (issue 356, p 34), and he wrote an article for cent magazine (issue 20, p 21-24). max spoke in germany at backup festival in weimar (video: mdr tv report ) and at fmx in stuttgart (he also played a vj/dj set there at itfs with michael fakesch ). spin came out on the best of british animation awards vol. 9 dvd . 1923 and 1925 started screening on visual music programme phase 3 (vol. x) on german tv br-alpha. in april, max was artist in residence at nida art colony in lithuania. the kaleidobooth smartphone app came out for windows phone (try it for free or read the review on noknok or the uel kaleidobooth press release ). in the uk, max's new film shift - produced by animate projects - premiered on channel 4 to 180,000 viewers and featured in max's first london solo exhibition at tenderpixel (see dazed digital and imperica interviews and because magazine review). max played live at the european media art festival in osnabrück, germany (article: neue osnabrücker zeitung ). re:ax won best sound at derapage in canada. aanaatt came out on the animation avantgarde 01 dvd published by asifa austria. in march, max lectured at vilnius art academy in lithuania. he was "in full effect " at go short festival in nijmegen, holland: on the jury (video: jury report ), presenting a retrospective of his work, and playing live visuals at the festival closing party (video: go short interviews max hattler , animatie article: een interview met animatiemaker max hattler ). in spain, max also attended animac with a live performance and a special screening . he gave tutorials to animation students at the university of portsmouth . and videoformes festival premiered the hattler-initiated cadavre exquis . in february, max held a short workshop at the royal college of art and was on the music, video, art? panel at exposures in manchester (see accompanying interview ). in jan+feb, spin toured the uk with the british animation awards where it was one of 3 finalists in the best short film category (check out praise for spin from the double negative ). |

in december, max was on a panel with emma geliot, james lowne and gary thomas at the animate digitalis commissions launch at bfi southbank, london. max also wrote digitalis ubiquitous? ramblings of a self-confessed digital native for the digitalis catalogue . max also completed a 4-week experimental animation class for ba students at chelsea college of art & design , which resulted in shape rainbow , a collaborative 15-minute film. in november, max and indieskies presented a preview of their kaleidobooth phone app at the launch of alphalabs.cc , the new art/tech platform by nokia + onedotzero . max played live at club westgermany in berlin, as part of the let the rhythm hit 'em exhibition at kunstraum kreuzberg / bethanien which also featured some of max's films (5.11.2011-15.1.2012, also see zdf.kultur documentary on the exhibition). off and free film festival in seoul, korea, presented a max hattler retrospective. basement jaxx: where's your head at won best animated music film at animafrik in accra, ghana. sync won best video installation at multivision festival (russia), the visual music award special prize (germany), and a special mention at premio simona gesmundo (italy). a.n.d / worldwide interactive design guide featured max. in october, max took part in nova: contemporary culture at cinemateca brasileira in sao paulo, brazil. hex pixel gallery in kansas city, usa, showed max's work. max was featured in the article vj to visual artist on mb! magazine. an interview with max (by london school kids) appeared on arts education website film street . in september, max took part in camp: festival for visual music 2011, part 2 in karlsruhe, germany (lecture + a/v performances). he also attended two events in switzerland, fantoche festival (with sync) and one young world (with new film re:ax). max also performed /\/\/\ with noriko okaku at hackney film festival in london. and aanaatt received a special mention at abstracta festival in rome. in august, aanaatt won best experimental film at open cinema festival in saint petersburg. spin won awards at lago film fest + san gio video festival , both in italy. and 1923 aka heaven + 1925 aka hell won the audience award at animate open: digitalis . in july max took part in open research panel: audiovisual performances at chelsea college of art & design with mike faulkner + matthias kispert (d-fuse), ben sheppee (lightrhythm visuals), blanca regina + noriko okaku. max also gave tutorials at chelsea. onedotzero published a video interview with max . drift was included on the selected shorts 12: labo works dvd, and sync started showing on the center for visual music channel on instant cinema . in june, max took part in camp: festival for visual music 2011, part 1 in zagreb, croatia (see performance here). in may and june, max + noriko were artists in residence at quartier21 , museumsquartier, vienna. they showed their exhibition transform there at asifakeil. they appeared on orf (austrian tv), and denkfabrikat interviewed them (in german). they performed /\/\/\ at vienna independent shorts , and max was also on the festival jury. max lectured at the academy of fine arts (as part of the animation avantgarde academy ) and twice at wiener kunstschule . the book the end: an electric sheep anthology came out, including max's essay sync - circular adventures in animation. spin won the grand prize at moves festival in liverpool in may, and heaven + hell showed as an installation at plastic paper in winnipeg, canada. max made a poster for japan . in april, he created concert visuals for jovanotti + the vienna independent shorts 2011 festival trailer. max joined ryoichi kurokawa, quayola, mattia casalegno + telcosystems on cimatics agency's exclusive roster of audiovisual artists. max was interviewed for mtv brasil and tracey chan's blog . he attended skepto film festival in sardinia, picking up the supershort award for spin. as part of nova: contemporary culture , max gave a talk at escola de artes visuais do parque lage and performed live at casa franca-brasil in rio de janeiro, brazil - see here. at donaufestival in krems, austria, max + noriko played live visuals for diplo + presented their live performance + film screening, film networks: max hattler & noriko okaku: /\/\/\ . in march, max lectured about his work at chelsea college of art & design , the aa school of architecture + middlesex university (all in london) + at university of portsmouth (portsmouth, uk) + anima festival (brussels). max also played audiovisual concerts with mehmet can özer at anima festival + at exposition of new music (brno, czech republic). taiwanese magazine dfun featured max in their spring issue (no. 36). in february, max was featured on hilda magazine + on belgium's premier cultural programme, cobra tv + on french canal plus, in mensomadaire: l'internationale numérique , a 1-hour programme on ten moving image makers including chris cairns, telegraphics, david russo, thorsten fleisch, keiichi matsuda, rosto, nomint + reuben sutherland. in january, max held a workshop + lecture at calarts , usa. in switzerland, max attended solothurn film festival where he was on the jury for swiss music videos, gave a masterclass and was featured in a 2-person screening with jonas odell . in berlin, max vj'ed at shade inc ; and directors lounge presented max's solo-screening relations & abstractions . in london, max was featured artist at video is the only constant , and design week introduced max's work as its cover story - read it here! 2010 SELECTED
2010 was a busy year. in december, max was on the jury at videomedeja in novi sad, serbia. he also presented a 10-film screening of his work, a live a/v performance with ocusonic , and a heaven + hell double-projection installation at videomedeja. a heaven + hell installation was also shown in saint petersburg at yota space , where max spoke at the onedotzero_new creators conference, together with joanie lemercier (anti vj), carri munden (cassette playa), quayola, matt wade (kin design) and field . in the uk, the animation is twenty five dvd came out. it includes max's collision alongside work by suzie templeton, gaelle denis, ian gouldstone, johnny kelly + other rca animation alumni. in november, 1925 aka hell won the award for best short short at st. louis international film festival (usa). max + noriko okaku ran a 3-day workshop + performed /\/\/\ at anilogue festival in budapest (and were featured in unit magazine + on d1 tv ). max also designed anilogue's posters . spanish canal plus tv featured max's work in el tamaño no importa . in japan, shift magazine published an interview with max [english | japanese ], and art re-public tokyo + taicoclub film project started showing 1923 aka heaven every night across 7 public screens in shibuya, tokyo. in london, max spoke at met film school + attended onedotzero 2010 with heaven + hell. max also played the last in a series of asure a/v concerts with turkish composer mehmet can özer at the goethe-institut in ankara, turkey. in october, max + mehmet played asure twice in ankara, and in denmark at musikhuset (aarhus), apparat lab (aalborg) + the animation workshop (viborg). max also gave talks at musikhuset aarhus + goethe institut ankara, and was interviewed on trt radyo ankara . spin won third prize at giguk: gießen videoart festival in germany + max was featured in schön! (issue 8). from july to september, max was artist in residence at the animation workshop (viborg, denmark), creating the hattlerizer (a visual instrument developed with sune petersen ) + video installation sync. in september, max spoke + performed at the animation workshop. spin won the political animation award at klik! amsterdam animation festival + aanaatt won the first prize visual music award . mumia festival in brazil presented a 12-film max hattler screening. max was on the jury at circuito off (venice, italy) where he also presented a screening with ace norton (check the interview ) and performed (O) with noriko okaku. in august, max premiered sync as part of time, what makes us tick? (noorderzon festival, groningen, holland), a collaborative installation by artists max hattler + nelleke koop with scientists prof. martha merrow + prof. eric bergshoeff, produced by pavlov e-lab + supported by open workshop . max also took part in nova at the museum of image and sound in sao paulo, brazil, performing /\/\/\ + holding a workshop with noriko okaku . italian magazine pig interviewed max (pdf | online ). in july, max's your highness premiered on zeit online + was featured by deutsche welle ,weekend argus , arte tv , video static + others. collision won a jury award at marin county festival of short film + video . heaven + hell screened in max's solo exhibition at broadway in nottingham, uk, + in the darkroom , an exhibition at ccc, shizuoka, japan. in june, max hattler, robert seidel + daniel burkhardt were in taiwan for their 3-person show tripolar at moca taipei . robert + max also did a talk at moca and were interviewed by radio taiwan int'l. also in june, spin screened on austrian tv orf 2 . max initiated the 2011 hd edition of videoformes exquisite corpse . max + noriko performed (O) at animafest zagreb + vis - vienna independent shorts . max also premiered rescore 192010 at vis, and they awarded aanaatt a special mention. /\/\/\ (by max + noriko) won the contest for audiovisual performances at videofestival in bochum, germany (/\/\/\ was performed by noriko with diane karner of decollage.tv covering for max who was away in taiwan). varoom (issue 12) came out, including darryl clifton's article animation's brave new worlds , discussing the work of max, quayola + richard fenwick. film & festivals magazine (issue 22) included pooja pottenkulam's article the short of it featuring max hattler + other animation filmmakers. in may, austrian tv okto screened a max hattler portrait. franziska bruckner of vienna university hosted 'max hattler: director's talk' at ursula blickle videolounge at kunsthalle wien , and franziska's students wrote reviews of spin and of aanaatt . max was q+a'd by adam buxton at bug 19 at the nft in london, and by claire spencer cook at cryptic nights - onedotzero craftwork screening at cca glasgow . oh yes featured on court-circuit / kurzschluss on franco-german tv channel arte . max held a workshop at école régionale des beaux-arts in valence, france. a max hattler solo exhibition opened at lumen eclipse in cambridge, ma, usa, and ran til june. thanks to goethe-institut mexiko and in collaboration with circuito electrovisiones , max presented his work in mexico city: a lecture at habitacion del ruido ; live a/v set remixing the past at centro cultural de españa ; and one-off live set inchoate m3x/c(-) with pablo gav at jornada de comunicacion at universidad marista . max also acted as jury for the universidad del claustro de sor juana audiovisual competition. in germany, max ran an animation workshop at ferienakademie roggenburg (read about it in südwest presse ), where he also took part in 3-person show kunst ist versuchung (with martin durham + eva-maria kollischan); max vj'ed to lexy's dj set at sucasa in ulm; he presented work in progress of his defa-award funded, japan-inspired, ongoing film project bipolar (with robert seidel ) at the animation exchange forum at filmfest dresden ; and aanaatt started screening on visual music programme phase 3 (volume VII) on german tv br-alpha. in london, max introduced collision + aanaatt at the animation film season at ciné lumière, and onedotzero acquired 1923 aka heaven, 1925 aka hell, drift + striper v0.1 for non-exclusive distribution. /\/\/\ featured in blanca regina's article in mcd – musiques et cultures digitales special edition 04. 1923 aka heaven + 1925 aka hell were featured in stash issue 67, in televisual (and on their blog ) on apengine , motionographer , promo news + countless blogs. in march, aanaatt received a special mention at regensburg short film week + max presented a screening of avant garde animation at animated worlds at cinephilia west in london. max also gave a lecture + mini-workshop at university of westminster . in february, max directed two animation loops inspired by french outsider artist augustin lesage - 1923 aka heaven + 1925 aka hell - during a 5-day film jam with students at the animation workshop in viborg, denmark. the other directors who ran film jams were alexei alexeev, amy winfrey, jamie caliri, tod polson and priit tender. max also presented audiovisual abstractions at the 6th berlin int'l directors lounge , and he lectured at ravensbourne college in london. lrv_magazine came out, feat. max hattler, light surgeons, d-fuse, ne1co, shantell martin, actop, raquel meyers + others. aanaatt was selected for spain-wide touring programme animac mobile . aanaatt also toured the uk with the british animation awards . in january, spin premiered on canal+ in france, while max + noriko performed (O) at the 7th london short film festival , and /\/\/\ at electrovision , london. they also played oh yes at vis: kurzfilm(z)immer in vienna, austria. drift was shown in a videoformes special on souvenirs from earth tv , repeating monthly thru 2010. |

in december, max lectured at southampton solent university . he vj'ed at ex mercedes benz in neu-ulm and at jackbox nye at sucasa in ulm, germany. kate taylor wrote about max and his upcoming film spin on electric sheep . the book artist in residencies around the world came out, with two pages about max. in november, aanaatt received a special mention 'for the art form' at no-festival in chelyabinsk, russia. max was interviewed for apengine . max + noriko performed oh yes in belgium at int'l short film festival leuven and at cimatics festival in brussels. max was on the jury at fredrikstad animation festival in norway. the festival also presented a max hattler & noriko okaku retrospective, and the premiere of max + noriko's live animation performance /\/\/\. also in nov, max attended exground filmfest with aanaatt; he lectured at ravensbourne college ; and he presented his work at pecha kucha night london . the book limited language: rewriting design - responding to a feedback culture by colin davies + monika parrinder came out, featuring collision. in oct, andrew selby's book animation in process came out, featuring max in-depth with striper v0.1. max started teaching animation at goldsmiths and the university of east london again. max attended dok leipzig with aanaatt; he presented a screening of his films, followed by live a/v set remixing the past at optica festival in madrid; and he had a retrospective with q+a at branchage film festival. branchage also presented a 'max hattler case study' as part of the short sighted panel discussion by bafta + shooting people. in september, aanaatt won the award for best design at eksjö animation festival in eksjö, sweden. max was at discovery 09 in amsterdam, where he played an experimental [3D camera + 3D laser scanner data] headline VJ set with help from enist + alex bucksch of TU delft. max also attended square eyes: hertz & lux / made in arnhem in arnhem, holland, presenting films and performing oh yes with noriko okaku. in august, max was on the jury at muuuvi festival in transylvania, also playing oh yes with noriko. in july, max + noriko performed oh yes at curtas vila do conde in portugal. in june, max attended annecy animation festival thanks to support from the british council . he also did a screening + talk at wellington college . and glastonbury festival showed a full-length recording of oh yes. max's where's your head at concert visuals for basement jaxx were featured on promo news , animation show , 'boards , creative review , netribution , videostatic , directors notes , page , and more. max was interviewed for jotta magazine , film london and videopark . aanaatt won the host award at videofestival bochum and it was featured in inmotion . in may, max gave a lecture on abstract animation at volda university college in norway. he presented a programme of german experimental films at image forum festival in tokyo with robert seidel . nano universe released max's limited edition collision t-shirts in japan - you can read about it in the may 2009 paper issue of someone's garden (in japanese). max also played oh yes live with noriko okaku at birobox workshops in nottingham, uk. in april, max + noriko premiered oh yes at moves09 in manchester. max also held a 5-day filmmaking masterclass at ferienakademie roggenburg in germany, and the accompanying exhibition kunst (er)schöpft showed four of his films. revija amaterskog filma in zagreb presented a screening of six of max's works, and max lectured at southampton solent university . aanaatt was featured in repérages magazine . since april 2009, drift is screening on german-french video art tv channel souvenirs from earth . in march, max made concert visuals for the egg. in feb, max was one of five featured artists at tratado de integracion: legion.02: refresco! in neuquen, argentina. he did a talk at southampton solent university and started teaching on the moving image + animation degrees at the university of east london . in january, max did talks at khm / academy of media arts in cologne and at ravensbourne college of design in london. he also attended int'l film festival rotterdam with aanaatt thanks to a film london film-makers festival fund travel award. ian lumsden featured drift on his animation blog and directors notes published an interview with max about aanaatt. |

in december, the max hattler vs. robert seidel dvd was released in japan by uplink . in november, jemapur's evacuation cd+dvd was released by w+k tokyo lab , it includes aanaatt. max spent oct+nov in paris, working on spin with autour de minuit . also in nov, max lectured and performed with noriko okaku at animated dreams festival in estonia; presented his work in tokyo; did a talk the royal college of art ; and performed remixing the past at exground filmfest in germany. aanaatt featured in boards and max was interviewed by sprayblog and moonlinx.jp . in october, max was on the jury at curtocircuito festival in spain, and also performed remixing the past there. the book re-imagining animation - the changing face of the moving image by pauls wells + johnny hardstaff came out, featuring max's film drift. aanaatt was mentioned on countless blogs including motionographer and stash feed, with a nice interview on white-screen . and webdice.jp published an interview with max + robert seidel. japanese cg world, someone's garden magazine and quotation magazine all included sizeable articles about max's work. drift was featured in issue 22 of specialten dvd magazine, and it won awards for best digital film at london international animation festival and best experimental film at muuuvi festival in romania. in september 2008, max was a guest at animae caribe in trinidad and animationvolda festival in norway, screening films and performing live visuals. in august and july, max played live visuals for the egg at camp bisco in new york state, usa, and at haselstock festival in england. finally, please click here for details of max hattler + robert seidel's 23-event 5-week japan tour in april + may 2008. |
